The Bordentown Porch Fest is This Saturday, May 2, 2026

There is much to fret about. The streets of Bordentown City will be bustling with fascinating live music to see and to hear as musicians gather on various porches around town sharing their unique talents with all the different people crowding the pavement, interested in indulging.

I gazed lovingly at a few of the acts in previous years and I can still yap about that monumental day excitedly as if the visually engaging live music performances happened in the beauty of yesterday’s sunset.

And here we are approaching the Bordentown Porchfest happening this weekend on Saturday, May 2nd, 2026 and once again, scores of creatively charged musicians will gather on various porches around town, doing what they love to do most, which is music.

It brings a smirk to my face to say that I will also be performing at Bordentown’s Porchfest this year sharing a collection of both cover tunes and original songs. Meet me at 4 East union Street in Bordentown City, NJ at 2PM.

I am so looking forward to the vibrant day unfolding and hope to experience your joyful energy in the midst of it all. See you there!

But until then, check out a video taken from last year's Bordentown Porchfest here: https://youtube.com/shorts/_1DIip4HGIk?si=3o0WZ7MW9jqGH5wn

Songwriter Wednesday: "Time Machine"

Have you ever wished that you had a time machine to be wherever you wanted to be in the blink of an eye?

No more 80-mile drives to a far distant place just to get into the things that your heart says yes to but your energy says, maybe another time. Instead, you could just climb into a contraption, press a few buttons, and boom, you are there.

You wouldn’t have to rely on airlines and hope that their staff doesn’t all get sick that day. You do not have to sit in rush hour traffic hoping that whatever mess is before you on the journey home will clear up. No more wishing to go back in time to revisit a person or to relive a moment. You could just climb into the time machine and Bam.

That is what I was thinking about when I wrote the song “Time Machine.” After a long work week, I want to be like the road runner and zoom home in a flash. I wish I had a “Time Machine” to be where I want to be and to do what I want to do when I want to do it.

If you could relate to any of this, please check out my song “Time Machine.”

Sometimes I wish I had a time machine at my disposal for so many different reasons. How about you?If so and you can relate then, add the full-length version ...

Looking Forward . . .

It is an exuberant feeling to know that after all that has taken place in 2020 and up to this point, we are still here.

And here we are on a path to restoration. I am hoping to be above it all at some point soon.

When I consider everything that has led up to this moment, it is amazing that I am not filled with bitterness. I have experienced heartache from losing a few people in my life to COVID19, including my drummer and one of my favorite promoters. Sometimes I felt like pouring out rain while in my solitude with ample time to think about all that happened and all the important things and people in my life.

Many musicians lost a great deal of musical jobs in 2020 while weathering the pandemic and yet still had to take the necessary steps that are needed to take while adulting. But thank God that things are slowly getting back to normal and that gigging is a happening thing again.

I look forward to the day that I can once again be astounded by the smiles on your faces, unmasked and in person. But until then, I pray that you are safe, and that grace will continue to be showered over your life.

I hope that we soon will be levitating and connecting on the other side of this
pandemic. I also hope that you might persevere through it all.

Looking forward to sharing new music and event invitations with you soon and hope that you will be open-minded in accepting some of them and being in the midst of the audience whether it is live streamed or in person.

May God continue to bless and to keep you and your family and loved ones.

Happy Easter everyone and much love!

On The Art of an Artist

Just thinking about the artists and their artistry as a whole. We spend our lives trying to find ourselves and our voices. We spend our lives trying to perfect trying to sing other people's songs, even though we have our art. We know the lyrics and music to a million songs but our own, we tend to not even practice singing them to remember the nuances to share it in a live setting.

We take our art personal. We give birth to the sounds that come from us and sharing is not always the easiest thing because people would be more inclined to enjoy hearing someone sing someone else's intellectual property as opposed to the ones that we take our time and effort to create. Or people will complain because you sound nothing like the artist that sang the song you covered. Or you feel hurt inside because you never feel like you did good enough just being who you are and you always feel this insecurity just to do what you love to do the most.

But then, when you actually do come up with your own melodies and sing them, you are not searching for your voice at all because it is right there in the song you created. You didn't try to be the sound someone else created. You were there being exactly who God fearfully and wonderfully created, even if you did draw inspiration from someone you admire.

So weird that we tend to search for things that are right there in front of us. And then you take a pause to think about it.

Nobody knows that you have art if you don't share it, even if after you do share it people
accuse you of being narcissistic or thinking that you are all that because you are saying "look at me". But then, nobody knows that you have your own voice if you don't let your own voice be heard.

The movie Us even shows the image of people trying to kill themselves to find themselves and doing all these experiments on our own selves just to be the image of what we think we should be, when we were right there all along, peering at who we are.

I am a singer/songwriter and I love music more than I like to eat; and I'm no skinny chick as you can tell. I write songs and I want to share one of them with you. Hopefully you will take the time to listen to my tune, "Gotta Go" here: https://youtu.be/vnsqyqGqpJU.  It's all about getting away from all the drama and the mysteries and the confusions that life holds so you can get back to being whole again.

P is for Perhaps My Favorite Thing of All in 2018 Was . . .

I tell you, 2018 has been an interesting year. Thank God I can actually say that I was blessed to see it.

It took a plethora of ups and downs to get to this moment and time but, to be able to say that I am

here presently in the moment, once again to almost experience the end of another year, it is nice to

be able to acknowledge my favorite thing of all in 2018.

I walked into my 40th year fabulously with music and friends and family and loved ones and smiles,

laughter, and joy all around me. Not everyone has the opportunity but God kept me and that is

something that I do not take lightly.

So for all the beautiful people who have touched my life and has been a part of what I claim as true

inspiration, I honor you and thank you and wish you love and happiness in all that you do.

I have seen a lot in my 40 years and I can say, not all of them were the best decisions but to be able

to say, I have survived the turbulence and the sad moments because there was a balance of

so many happy moments that I can say, I have been blessed and I know it.

And with that in mind, I dedicate to you a rendition of one of my favorite songs and the tune that

made me want to sing when I saw my favorite movie, The Sound of Music as a kid and I saw Julie

Andrews singing the Rogers & Hammerstein tune "My Favorite Things."  If it had not been for that

moment, I probably would have never started singing or most likely would have never been so into

music and a vocalist who loves to sing more than eat today; and I'm a foodie so that means a lot.

This song was performed at the Creative Jazz Organization's Jazz Night where they presented a night

of music with the Lon Ivey Band which I had the opportunity of being the featured vocalist. The song

was performed at the American Legion Post 483 in Rosedale, NY.

I am filled with joy anytime I get to sing but this one especially because it is one of my favorite

songs. Hopefully it will created a smile in your heart as well.  You can check it out

O is For Once You Know

“Once you know what you want, getting it requires perseverance”
- Vanessa Van Edwards

I felt sharp with excitement to be able to sit down and have a conversation about the beautiful culture of jazz with award winning NY-based jazz saxophonist, Carl Bartlett Jr.

He took the time to describe what changed the script for him to submit himself to the art of jazz that became a way of life for him which lead to his becoming a finely crafted jazz musician. Just by listening, you can hear the amount of confidence that this brilliant architect of music has, as he graced my radio show Jazz on the JNote with his time, music and thoughts.

Once I knew I wanted to find out the answer to what is Jazz, I used it as a basis for writing my college thesis which through the process, my radio show Jazz on the JNote was born at Medgar Evers College and I used it along the way as I set out to write 30 pages on jazz, identity and racism. Through writing it, I came across many books where this question is posed and no two people respond the same. I have interviewed several different artists and have received some interesting responses. And so, as I continue on with this show and am blessed with more opportunities to feature guests on the show, I will continue to pose the question because it leads to interesting thoughts worth considering; especially for me who is also a vocalists who sings jazz as well.

As I asked Bartlett Jr the question "what is jazz?,"  he made a concerted effort to answer. He also shared his story on how he broke through in the breakthrough initiative segment and shared his thoughts on why he feels it is important for musicians to practice repeatedly, on purpose.

Bartlett Jr is a NY-Based musician who is making a difference with his music.  Jazz seeps through is pores. Everyone who listens to his music, loves what they hear.

He has achieved great heights because once he knew what he wanted to be, he became a creature of habit and worked to the point of exhaustion to breakthrough.

I am thankful that he was willing to share about his lifetime of experience as a jazz musician. If you are interested in listening to our interview, please click on the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25EfqdswfM4&feature=youtu.be

This episode was originally aired on Sunday, August 19, 2018 on http://theenglishconnectionmedia.com at 7PM and is definitely an inspirational treat for young musicians looking for motivation. Hope you'll check it out

N is for Nature of My Culture

The nature of my culture exercises influence in me.

The nature of my culture gives me the security of knowing my own beauty.
The nature of my culture makes me know that I am a fine work of art.
The nature of my culture gives me enough confidence and strength to be myself.

I feel at ease in my own skin.
I am glowing in melanin.
The Haitian in me is woven in the script.
I have all this culture, music and creativity built within.

The nature of my culture makes me want to be bold in the face of a blank sheet.
The nature of my culture makes me want to share my identity brusque authority.
The nature of my culture takes you on a journey over land and sea.
The nature of my culture makes me want to share a piece of my beauty.

I want to make you see why I have romantic gestures about the land.
I want to ease out the stigmas of this culture if I can.
And psyched that Chokarella gave me the opportunity
To share a piece of my cultural identity.

Thank you Prrrl for helping me out with this interview/performance.
Thank you Tadia for the call
and for having me on this Chokarella New York Takeover.
Such a dope event.
Thank you for checking out my blogpost!

I is for In Times of Great Stress, Be Inspired

“In times of great stress or adversity,
it’s always best to keep busy,
to plow your anger and your energy
into something positive”
(Lee Iacocca)

Yesterday, I heard some really, horrible news. A musical mentor of mine whom I loved dearly has left the earth to be with the Lord.

I can’t tell you how sad I am to know that someone I was so dramatically interconnected
with as Wayne Holmes has lived out all the days that had been ordained for him on this earth. He meant a lot to me and I am definitely experiencing a valley today that I didn’t expect to be sinking into.

His Life

He always attacked everything on his plate with grace, enthusiasm and joy.  He always had a big smile on his face whether he was playing his organ at church on Sunday mornings or at various musical venues playing jazz and other genres of music.

He always seemed to brighten the lives of others with his cheerful demeanor as he applied love and wisdom to everything that he did. I would call him a positive influencer because he served as a positive role model in my life and won my respect and admiration. Who knew that he would fall into a heavy sleep that he would never again awaken from; so suddenly and unexpected at that.

His Death

Last night, I tried not to take captive every thought about the reality of Wayne Holmes no longer being with us. But instead, my mind ran a million miles through the dead of night all the way up until the morning with good memories and sorrowful thoughts about the world ahead without him. A story of woe I guess as I find myself adjusting to the circumstance of the end of a life.

A sad reality it is indeed that in his present plight, all who were affected will now weed in the silence in between the threads of what used to be his voice of valiance speaking wisdom.

He was such a giving person that every hat that he wore that I loved, he would let me go home with. No more cool hats. :/

No more phenomenal chords or great solos by this musical genius. No more worthy advice or words that he'd share that made me happy to hear.

But nonetheless, I am thankful for having ever crossed paths with him because I learned a few things from him.

His Legacy

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart,
as working for the Lord, not for human masters,
since you know that you will receive
an inheritance from the Lord as a reward;
it is the Lord Christ you are serving”
(Colossians 3:24)

It never took too much for him to get in gear. He sacrificed his time to do what he could to help people and if he decided to brave a situation, he gave all that he had to give. He was always on time and worked with pride and showed he cared about others concerns. He approached life like a warrior in battle and fought a good fight to the end.

I can saturate my mind with good thoughts about him because he was such a humble being. He was a friend. He was a mentor. He was someone who encouraged me to be more because he had so much faith in me. He pushed me into singing jazz and helped me to articulate myself better as an artist. He inspired me to believe in my own talent because he knew that there was so much greater out there for me.

And he played musical sets at his gigs that were so irresistible, you could not help but want to watch; especially when he did his tributes to Ray Charles and portrayed the role like none else could with professionalism and gracefulness. He taught me that simply adding a smile to what you do invites people in and has the power to transform someone’s day. The brightness on his face that he was so willing to share with everyone will definitely be missed.

I smile with pure joy at the fact that he was in my life even though he has left me behind. He took the world by storm, remained in focus of doing his due diligence to make the work that he was on this earth to complete, a meaningful experience. Please smile with me as I pay tribute to his life covering Charlie Chapman’s tune “Smile” performed live with the recently deceased Wayne Holmes on piano and Donald Nicks on bass here: https://youtu.be/neI_I0zgkJ8

I guess I’m rattling off a bit but, now that he is not here with us to receive the flowers he deserved when he was alive, put a damper on my weekend; more than the dampness of the torrential rains hitting New York.

The death of my good friend has affected my thinking and I can’t help but wrestle with the idea that this musical mentor of mine who would tell everyone that I was like his daughter is gone. It is sad to think we will never again share the musical stage together. He trusted me so much to add me to his musical experiences and got me into singing outside of my comfort zone.

If it were not for him, I would not sing jazz. If it were not for him, I probably would not have pursued musical pedagogies so that I could know more. His death is a true loss to this world and to my life.

Today I sit here reflecting and smiling at the good old times of a man who was a like a father figure to me. Thank you for everything.

Well done Wayne Holmes! RIP!

I Tried Something Different And It Worked. I Labeled It Change!

“Neglecting to broaden their view
has kept some men doing one thing all their lives”
(Napoleon Hill)

Everything gets labeled on how you want to describe something. You look at a flower peeking it’s face out of the soil and you can easily say, it’s a hyacinth or it’s a rosebud. You listen to a sound of music and you can identify it as R&B, Jazz or Pop music. And so, thinking about this made me think about myself and how I label myself when giving a short description about who I am beyond just the face and name.

When asked to describe myself, usually the first thing I would say is that I am a singer-songwriter from Brooklyn, NY which is true. But, I write more than songs.

Poetry Writing

I have been writing poetry since the fifth grade and recently, I authored two poetry books: The first was titled “Pulchritudinous” and the second “And Then There Was the Music; Poetry & An Essay.” Check out my author page on Amazon Author Central here: https://www.amazon.com/Stephanie-Jeannot/e/B076N7XYC6

Songwriting & Writing Compositions

I write compositions. The first one I ever wrote was quite recently when I found myself with this melody in my brain that I just had to write down on paper but what I wrote was more than just the words, but the chords of the song on paper before even recording the tune into what it came to be. Thankful that I had good friends who helped me to complete the tune entitled “God is Love” which you can check out on Spotify here:

Blog Writing

I write blog posts which surprisingly enough has been getting so much love lately and I am so thankful that people actually are interested in what I have to write. Thank you all who take the time to check out my blogsite. If it had not been for my college professor in his teaching of Professional writing, I never would have started writing blogposts at all. But he made us all start a blog site and this was my first one, if you are interested in checkign it out: https://stephanayjnotes.blogspot.com/.

Playwriting

And so, writing has always been my thing. But what I never did was found such an interest in writing something that I researched “how to” do it. It taught me how to place my words on the page, the font face to use, how to space things out and everything. And that is how I wrote my first play and the production of it was performed live this weekend for the first time.

It was nerve wrecking. It tested my faith. It brought tears to my eyes and made me work harder than I ever had at anything before, but I got through it.

For the first time ever, I wrote a little play, “And Then There Were The Ladies of Jazz;” a production that I could have never have been able to see come to life if I had let go of God’s unchanging hand.

I wanted to tell a story and I wanted everybody to hear some historical things dealing with racial and gender identities that these women in jazz had to endure to become the iconic individuals that they are. But I wanted to make it fun and give people something to watch that was interesting and fun.

I can’t believe we did it. Thank you to everybody who came out to support and for laughing and clapping when I was hoping that these things would happen. You all are so blessed and to have this weight of wanting to see it happen as badly as I did, off my shoulder, is so inspiring to me; Especially after the worthless worrying, the setting up of the room, the three wardrobe changes I did which included trying to come out my shell by putting on my tap shoes, and the singing a plethora of songs that left me feeling weary, but good. All that is left to say is... thank you and God is awesome.

And to all the people who gave me advice or had their hands in it. So very thankful. And for every circumstance that helped me with getting the costumes together or to printout some stationaries for my guest audience to take home and the putting together of props that seemed weirdly placed into my zine, just for me, at the most awkward time and in such unique ways. And for all the musicians and singers who had to see me get into my crazy... thank you for bearing with me.

It was fun. It was a delight. It was a pleasure. It was a vision I had as a way of celebrating women’s history month and I am glad to have seen it come to light. And now I am happy to say, I am a singer and writer from Brooklyn, NY.

Thank you so much for checking out my blogpost. God bless!

Gift Ideas for Singer/Songwriters

The time has come when we start to think about getting the perfect gift for those musical people in our lives who concentrate their efforts on trying to conjure up creative lyrics and unforgettable melodies.

I am particularly talking about the singer/songwriters; those familial stars in our loves who are all about progress to elevate their craft and touch us emotionally with the amazing riffs found in the music that they create. And so, being a singer/songwriter, I compiled a list of things that might ruffle the feathers of those talented skylarks that you know and love.

Gift Ideas for Singer/Songwriters

Here are 12 gift ideas that might add some inspiration into those talented individuals in your life.

1. 2018 Standard Diary

Important dates are something that all people want to keep. For the singer/songwriter, it is important to write down dates for musical engagements as a way to make sure that you never double book by accident. Keeping a record of what is to come keeps your mind ready for what is important and this particular Standard Diary for 2018 is one I love.

I have been using it for years and every year I love it more for several reasons.  It has one lined page for each day of the year. Can't go wrong with a book that features lined pages for someone who enjoys writing. Not only can you write down engagements for particular dates but you have a lot of space to include a series of things that you might want to include (ex. dress code, musicians who will join you, address, fee).

The front of the book has a small address book where you can include numbers of the important people, perhaps clients for whom you want to keep the number saved. And in the last few pages of this book, there is an area where you can keep a calculation of what you earned and spent which is always a good way to keep a record of your musical earnings and expenses for the year (ex. Gas, tolls, business meetings, supplies and equipment). Great book to have!

2. Songwriter’s Market 40th Edition: Where & How to Market Your Songs

There is a new Songwriter’s Market Book every year that is published and each year, there is updated information on places you can send your music, people who might be interested in listening to what you have got to offer, advice to spark more creativity and edge, publication information and websites that might be helpful to a songwriter’s career. This book is a great tool for any singer/songwriter in your life. The 2018 edition is the 40th edition of this book.

3. Microphone Music Stand Tablet/Smartphone Holder Mount

There is no doubt about it; it is the computer age and sadly enough, we have our phones in our hands at least 75% of the day. So, when at a gig, nobody wants to see a phone in a musician’s hand; especially if it might be to read lyrics. The thing to consider though is where to put it?

Here is an idea. Put your phone on the microphone stand right in front of you. There is a mount for that which you can add to your microphone stand to keep it safe and secure while you are wooing your crowd. Even better, if you need to carry your lyrics or music chart and want to save yourself the trouble of having to print them out on paper, add these documents to your Ipad or tablet, and mount that onto your mic stand and read off the tablet from there. It is an easy fix to keeping your hands free and also securing your devices during live performances.

 4. SanDisk 16GB 2.0 Flash Disk

We all have our music and maybe we also have show tracks that we can perform to if the day comes when your gig is a solo one without a band. Sadly not many computers have CD players anymore but you can never go wrong with a flash disk.

Add your background music to this 16GB junk drive and have it ready to give to the DJ or to the facilitator of the event so that when it is your turn to perform, you can have it on hand and ready for usage.

 5. Bose L1 Compact With Carry Case and Speaker Bag

I feel like this story is important to share in order to make relevant the importance of this product to a performing singer/songwriter.

I was supposed to do this gig on day and a musical individual I know told me that as long as I do gigs at this particular venue, I could use his sound system and he would keep it there. The day of the gig came and for some reason, every half hour, the musicians kept calling me and asking me if they wanted me to bring their sound system and I would say no because there was one at the venue. After about being called ten times with the same question, I contacted the musical individual who initially told me that I could use his sound system anytime and he told me that he took it out and further argued that it was his and he could do whatever he wanted with it.

Thank God I had great musicians working with me who I consider friends. Never a bad idea to have your own though. And so, I invested in one and it was one of the best moves I have ever made because you never know if the venue will have one available to you.

This particular one I love because I am a female and I can carry this which is not so heavy on the train and have the ability to maneuver it without much effort. It works very well and amplifies my voice just the way that it should. I have used it for indoor gigs. I have used it for outdoor gigs and it provided sound just the way that it should. I love my Bose system and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a great amplification system.

6. Pyle 3 Piece Professional Dynamic Microphone Kit with Carrying Case

As a singer/songwriter, sure a club should have everything there for you to use and perhaps you should just be able to walk in and blow away but, who has handled the microphone that is being provided?

How often do they clean these mics that everybody and their mamas have sneezed into, spit into while singing and coughed into before it is your turn to use it? I say that because as singers, we get colds, laryngitis and other throat infections and may still sing while ailing.  At times, nothing will keep us from trying to do what we love and if are able, will do it even with just 10% of our strength available to us. But, who said that there is a mic available for you to use at all?

This set comes with three mics, the cables for the mics, the mic clips and a carrying case. You could never go wrong with at least having your own mic on deck just in case.

7.  Cardinal Economy Round Ring View Binders, 4 Per Pack

For the singer/songwriter who also composes and has the ability to write out chords, this set of binders is perfect to provide to the musicians to easily read and play along with the scores that you add inside.

Makes it easy to simply add the charts in the order of the set and to neatly turn the pages inside of the binders for the next song at hand.

8.  Vocal Yoga: The Joy of Breathing, Singing and Sounding

Maynard Ferguson once said that he gained the ability to hit all those high notes that he uses by doing yoga. Yoga is a great way to stretch out your muscles and I think it would be no different when it applies to the vocal chords.

What I like about yoga is that it also engages creativity and creates a nice flow of ideas to open up. Yoga teaches you how to breathe better and it is tremendous in helping to keep the wind instrument of the human voice healthy. Vocal Yoga provides awesome exercises in this book.

9.  Music Theory for Singers

I have to say that music theory is a good way to increase the flow of creativity because it gives you an extra set of sounds and ideas to work with. Scales, intervals and minors all added to what we are able to hear, even with the process of writing a song. Knowing different chords can open up a songwriter’s ears to so many possibilities.

Music Theory for Singers is a great way to inspire those creative people in your life who continually try to seek ideas to spark their creativity and then prostitute their talent. This is a great gift to actively play the part of sparking new ideas into the life of the singer/songwriter you know and love.

10. Microphone Pendant Necklace

You can never go wrong with jewelry and I do not know about any other musician, but for me, anything that has music symbols on it, sparks my interest. And so, this necklace is something I would love.

It has a microphone, is .925 sterling and is an 18-inch necklace. Very stylish and cute for any musician who I think would actually love this gift.

 11. Lyrics Notebook

I love notebooks and am still someone who favors writing in a book then just on a page on a word document. I carry books around and am constantly scribbling down something that has inspired me that I use in a song, story, blog, poem or something else. And so, I am always looking for the prettiest notebook out there that can make me smile.

The lyric notebook makes me smile because it is musical. It is made particularly for a music lover, musician or songwriter. It has 104 pages and is a great journal to have to write down new song ideas that you may have. Great gift for any songwriter.

12. Songwriter Big Cup of Awesome

I am always with a big cup of coffee, tea or water and you can find me up at all times of the night trying to apply the song ideas that I wrote to music. So what better idea than a cup that says it all. Yes I am a big cup of wonderful with a dash of personality and yes, I would love this cup.

Perfect for me or for any musician who loves things that are musical. The message is unique and lovable and shows support for what the singer/songwriter in your life presently loves to do and does.

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of The Year

When it comes to getting gifts for my loved ones, I always look for ways to add a bit of joy to their lives and to get something that is unique and that they will love. Usually, I am done my Christmas shopping by now but I can admit that I did not even step outside to go to any store on Black Friday.

But now with just a few weeks until the first day of Christmas arrives, I am left at liberty to truly think about what will make the people in my life smile. Hopefully these musical ideas might be something you will consider and perhaps will spark inspiration in the singer/songwriter in your life.
