Happy July

 

Joy fills my heart for all the good things I have encountered along the way to this moment and through the year that got me to the first of this new month.

 

Unbelievably fast, we rifle through the pages of this annual book and wonder if the speed of it all is actually cynically fictitious.

Learning however how to maneuver my way down the path as I connect more intimately with my maturing life and my purpose.

You know that as I enter in the new, I can’t deny the unfiltered inspiration I experience, the more comfortable I get with being me and with all of my natural elements.

 

And if you are around, come and hang with me as they close Newkirk Avenue to cars and make it a pedestrian fun zone for a day on July 12th, 2026. My band and I, Us3, will be performing live from 4-6 at the Flatbush Development Corporations Open Streets Event in front of 1616 Newkirk Avenue in Brooklyn, NY. The Bordentown Porch Fest is This Saturday, May 2, 2026

There is much to fret about. The streets of Bordentown City will be bustling with fascinating live music to see and to hear as musicians gather on various porches around town sharing their unique talents with all the different people crowding the pavement, interested in indulging.

I gazed lovingly at a few of the acts in previous years and I can still yap about that monumental day excitedly as if the visually engaging live music performances happened in the beauty of yesterday’s sunset.

And here we are approaching the Bordentown Porchfest happening this weekend on Saturday, May 2^nd, 2026 and once again, scores of creatively charged musicians will gather on various porches around town, doing what they love to do most, which is music.

It brings a smirk to my face to say that I will also be performing at Bordentown’s Porchfest this year sharing a collection of both cover tunes and original songs. Meet me at 4 East union Street in Bordentown City, NJ at 2PM.

I am so looking forward to the vibrant day unfolding and hope to experience your joyful energy in the midst of it all. See you there!

 It is Summer. Happy summer!

 

At this moment, my heart is fixated on the entire idea of summer. I feel empowered simply because the sun is beaming outside and it gives me vibes that I am on a winning path, which is why I came back to this atmosphere of respect to share my smiles and confidence with you.

The boundless love of God has brought us here to the month of July and there are so many unique stories to share about things that happened in the first half of the year; some that are nothing new under the sun and some that added an entire new palette of colors to my daily hustle and bustle. In a nutshell, 2023 stands out from the pack of years that have leaped into my existence.

I am excited about the summer and started this robust and thoughtful conversation to wish you a happy and safe July, Independence Day, and summer, as well as to share with you some of the upcoming live music events that I will be a part of and hope that you will come to share in the joys of harmonious sound.

Tonight, April 29, 2023, The Ed Jackson Quartet featuring Stephanie Jeannot at the Jackson Room

Music adds great value to my life. I love what happens in the unique cultural art spaces where musicians can vibe with each other and enjoy the deep reckonings of jazz music; especially when you can add your own harmonic ideas to it and make it flow. Jazz for me is a powerful driving force and I love it a lot.

And so, as your weekend steamrolls along, I hope that perhaps you will join me for a night of jazz music at the Jackson Room. This evening, April 29, 2023 from 7PM to 10PM at the Jackson Room located at 192-07 Linden Blvd in St Albans, NY, I will be featured with the Ed Jackson Quartet, singing a few songs that capture the joys of vocalizing jazz music. 

It is Jazz Appreciation Month and it’s Duke Ellington’s birthday; a

perfect day to echo some of the best of Ellingtonian jazz pieces and more, in a jazz club located in a place where so many of the jazz greats lived. The night will be part instrumental, and part vocal jazz and it will be awesome.

The evening might dictate that you get engrossed in a song, sing along, dance to the musical grooves, and simply feel the euphoric sense of freedom that the improvisational jazz conversations embody.

I will agree that I find enjoyment in spinning the plethora of jazz 45s in my music collection, but nothing beats the experience of live music because it allows experiential moments that you are bound to remember vividly in your memory.  And so with that in mind, I hope that you will join us for this special night of music happening this evening, April 29^th, 2023, from 7PM to 10PM at the Jackson Room located at 192-07 Linden Blvd in St Albans, NY.

What's Happening with JNote Music

 

This year seems to be speeding by with excessive speed.

 

It feels almost as if it were yesterday that the ball dropped into 2022 and we brought in the new year with screams of joy and hopes for a different season than the pandemic one that interrupted our flowing lives in so many different ways. But I am looking forward to the second half of the year that is about to embrace us with hopes that it will bring about much better times in all areas of our lives.

I have been in the studio working on new music and I looking forward to releasing brand new songs that I cannot wait for you to hear. I wrote about 90% of the songs and then I partnered with a few other amazing musicians who have contributed a great deal to who I am as a musician, singer and songwriter. 

My new music will definitely tell you a little bit more about who I am. So stay tuned.

In the midst of the new music that is about to be released, I will also join bassist and songwriting
partner, John Mueller for our second Midwest tour this summer and we will be doing it live and in style at various places such as the Magnus Music Festival in Dayton, MN on August 20^th and the Rock Island Labor Day Parade on September 5th. 

Other locations where we will play will be announced soon just in case you will be in the Midwest and are interested in coming.

But if The Doors Are Open, "I'll Be There."

As a singer, it is my job to find tunes that fit my tessitura. 

If I have the opportunity to serenade a roomful of folks, I want to try to champion my efforts by doing a song that properly fits my voice. This means that I should know every lyric and every nuance of the songs chosen and must also  be open to speculation if I forget even one lyric or utter the song a little different than what the listening audience knows. 

But even while doing cover songs, we as singers still work hard to try to create our own distinctive sound. Lately, I have had this willingness to just  experiment from the confines of the bandstand in front of whoever is there and so, I decided to start sharing my original compositions more and more because I am not just a cover artist; I am a songwriter. 

Such was the case the other night when percussionist, Rick Santa, asked me to co-host their open mic night at Hat City Kitchen in Orange, NJ. 

In spite of all the talks of the coronavirus, I feel that there is a sort of healingness in music and so, I showed up ready to sing. 

If God put me on this planet with a purpose, my duty is to share my gift and talent and so I did. The Corner Pocket Band was subtle and flexible which made it easy to be able to flex with them as I scanned the crowd and tried to send out some encouragement to the people and the establishment which saw less of a crowd because of growing concerns of their customers about the pandemic, as I sang the words to my song "I'll Be There." It always feels good to be able to do my own material and to see folks who are open-minded and willing to participate in my effort of getting people to have some type of response to what I am doing. 

I guess I will be home working on my music and craft until everything passes over. This is a time where we can focus on improving who we are and getting things done that we need to do until the light at the end of the tunnel appears. 

I won't say that I am not scared of becoming ill with this ailment but in growing times of uncertainty and unrest, I think this is the perfect time to even if you stay home from everything else, to make it to church on Sunday morning. Why wait until you actually get the disease to access God?  

Use your smarts. Be safe out there. Wash your hands. I see people who come out the bathroom stall and leave the lavatory without even sprinkling a bit of water onto their hands. 

Do you know if the person who touched the doorknob you just touched before you did, just picked their nose or sneezed without washing their hands? You just never know. 

Let's stay safe. If you feel sick, stay home. If you feel under the pressure and not sure of how to handle all the news reports, have an intimate conversation with God and see what happens. 

We should be actively praying for a healing over the world. I'll play it safe and be at home doing everything I can to keep my mind engaged and not get weary and lazy but on Sunday morning if the church doors are open, "I'll Be There."

Sometimes a Song Lyric, Filters Through Me Like "Wherever You Are"

Sometimes a song lyric, filters through me and it comes striking my thoughts, so full of color that I can’t ignore the vibration; I am forced to write. And so, I write.

“Wherever You Are” is one of those songs. My emotions were just right there and somehow I transferred what I was feeling at that very moment, musically. My Korg Triton was turned on and not that far after was I laying down piano chords onto my Cakewalk Sonar recording software.  

Getting into an environment where positivity is just flowing through the air makes me feel more than desirous to share what I conceived and gave birth to. Such was the case at Rustik Tavern.

There was live music and the night was being hosted by my friend Eric Frazier and the fact that the location of it was right there not too far from me in The Fort Greene section of Brooklyn, NY, made me get over my weariness real quick so I could be right there amongst the music lovers, musicians and locals enjoying the atmosphere.

The musicians were inspiring each other and blaring out a potpourri of wonderful sounds, appeasing to the heart. It was an open mic jam forum and so, I was excited to be able to join in the experience. My original song, 

“Wherever You Are” was in my heart 

and so, I pulled out my fake sheet for 

the tune, handed it to the musicians to accompany me and sang my lyrics.

The song lingered on and it just became a call-and-response thing and felt good to just let out my sigh for the day and to have a conversation with the warm hearts that let me in with their connecting.

Salute to all the songwriters unafraid to let you own words tumble out over your tongue and into the atmosphere. We conceive songs like babies being created fearfully and wonderfully. We put melodies together and then our children are born; our songs created with the spirit God crafted within us. When Performing My Own Song

One thing I never get tired of as an artist who writes songs and sings, is getting into the groove of my own song.



I have been singing ever since I was just a tiny itty bitty person and there's a great feeling when I get to sing and I am sharing the lyrics and melody of a song that I wrote. But then to see folks singing back with me is always a great experience as it was recently at Essence Bar & Lounge where I got a chance to share my song and like every other time singing my song, it was a moment that I enjoyed a lot. There is no doubt that I love to sing. It is a passion of mine and one of my favorite things to do in this world. And Then There Were The Ladies of Jazz

March is Women’s History Month which is a month to celebrate the remarkable women in history who have used the utmost limits of their naturally remarkable power to showcase their extraordinary talents.

On March 10, 2018 from 2PM to 3:30PM at the Roosevelt Public Library located at 27 W Fulton Avenue in Roosevelt, NY, I am excited to bring to you, “And Then There Were the Ladies of Jazz” which is a jazz show dedicated to some of the greatest women of jazz to ever share their talents with the world. This show will celebrate the lives of the first lady of song, Ella Fitzgerald, the pathos and tone of Billie Holiday, the operatic voice of the Divine One, Sarah Vaughan and the amazingly talented, Carmen McRae with music hosted by Stephanie Jeannot and her Jazz Quartet with special guest performances by JAzz E Matt, Dalthannette Munlin and Stacey Haughton, just to name a few.

These phenomenal women of jazz were newsmakers of their day. They tokenized the genre of vocal jazz with their memorable voices that just simply melted into the masses. They had global influence with their contributions to the culture.

For me, every time I listen to them strike a note, their voices generate happiness and heal my heart in scission, every time I listen to them sing. They embody the actual skill of what jazz singing is all about.

And while the tremendous struggle for equality was being fought, they were making progress by forcing a shift of mindset and helping to change legal, unjust and immoral Jim Crow establishments; many of which integrated so that these women would be allowed to showcase their talents at these establishments, becoming ambassadors of acceptance of people of color as human beings and creating a sense of belonging in places where blacks originally were not before.

Each, in their own way, showcased virtuosic musicianship and impacted the future with their influence that seemed to resonate in the hearts and spirits of multitudes of people across cultures. With this is mind, "And Then There Were the Ladies of Jazz" will feature meaningful moments in celebration of these women who transformed the world with their technical prowess. This show will focus on the profiles of these remarkable innovators who showed their strengths to the world not only as people of color but as women.

I am infamous for allowing vivid memories of the past, be the thicket of briers that I keep falling into and getting bruised all over again for something that is way beyond the current time restraint that I am in. Imagine being someone who is keeled over exhaustion from running backwards into sobering reminders of yesterday.

So what? I was tattered and torn. Darn scars! So what? I fell victim of my own mistakes. Darn detours! So what? The events of the moment that don’t seem so great stimulate thoughts that can mask a smile. Darn Debby downers! So What? Finances are climbing. Darn bills! So What? The driver next to me just cut me off two seconds off of getting snipped. Darn Road Rage! It has become alarmingly obvious to me that these things are a part of life and you just have to deal with it; plus there have been more good days than bad and the good needs to be acknowledged just as much as the bad! Maybe celebrated even more.

I had the opportunity to perform my original tune, “Enjoy Life” live with the JNote Band and it was a great experience to come before the masses and to do it for the first time and share my story in a song. I have found out that it is more important to thrive and to grow from these things. I have discovered that falling allows you the wings to fly higher than any bird in the sky. I have come to realize that your thoughts about your own self hold magnitude. It is better to think good about who you are and the possibilities than to stack your plate at the negativity buffet. 

Better to set out with confidence and greet each new day with a welcoming smile. The sun itself is pleasing to the eye and it is easier to take on the world with a measure of confidence and to enjoy life. For what is life without a little spice? A smile might just be that pinch of spice to make your life that much sweeter.

When I was just a little girl and my mom used to make her rounds just before she turned the lights off and sent me into lala land, each night would end somewhat like a fairytale.

By fairytale, I mean the happily ever after. By fairytale, I mean, she helped to make the day end on a sweet note. By sweet note, I mean that she would have me frozen in peacefulness when she started to sing me a lullaby. My favorite was always Alouette because it was layered in such beauty and I was in sheer comfort.

What a powerful way to guide a kid along the journey of starting to dream. What an exceptional moment in time to drive an adult back in time with such fond memories. I know that I was lovingly cared for. I know that I can never take those wonderful moments for granted.

If you remember this French lullaby, the lyrics spoke about stroking the feathers of a skylark. All I could do was listen with my heart because the song was so calming. How ironic that a skylark is a songbird? How ironic that I turned out to be a songbird? How ironic that Fleetwood Mac’s popular song, “Songbird” which was featured on the album Rumors, won album of the year in the year that I became a thought? How ironic that this might have been the message telling me exactly what I had been engineered for.

Years later, the pleasure of my eyes often fall on a stage with a microphone on it where I can share my gift with whoever is willing to entertain it for a minute. Some people never consider how things like a lullaby play such a large role in the person that you become. Those moments inspired meaning in me. They gave me reasons to put my fears to rest and to stay on the idea of knowing how to dream.

And then jazz came into my life. And then I started to love it. And then I started to sing it. And then I came across popular songs that made me flashback to yesterday’s smiles. One of them, “Skylark,” a 1941 popular song by Johnny Mercer and Hoagy Carmichael. When I first listened to it, I was unable to conceal my mirth. It reminded me of that beautiful part of my history that I am still in love with. And so, the lyrics and musical components of this jazz song fell deeply into my heart. The amalgamation of those perspectives are what lead me to want to sing it.

And so when I embraced a popping venue in my local habitation called Rustik Tavern to support my friend Eric Frazier’s longest running jazz jam session to ever be a part of Brooklyn’s lifetime, I joined the stage with the sizzling musicians on the stage and I had the pleasure of covering “Songbird.”
