Happy International Jazz Day

A surge of excitement comes over me when I hear the impeccably smooth sounds of jazz flowing out of my Behringer 328i speakers. The joy of the music takes over and I am caught up in the rapture of the passionate intensity of it all.

There is an assortment of enthusiastic jazz artists from all around the globe that shift my mind to peace when I hear their musical expression. The diversity of style from jazz great to jazz great gives me a pure passion to listen to their razzle dazzle. Sarah Vaughan is one of my all-time favorite singers. Her cultural contribution has had a profound impact on me and I often find myself playing her awe inspiring works on repeat and echoing her sweet refrains.

And so, as an artist, anytime I get to vocalize and to dress up a melody with my voice, it makes me feel invigorated. Each opportunity is a unique moment in time within itself. I get excited to progress towards a live performance.

I enjoy prancing about the stage and trying to circulate my energy through the room. There is nothing quite comparable to the feeling you get when you are fully immersed into what you love to do most. It is like a force of positivity taking over. Even more, when I get to echo my body of original works before a crowd.

In honor of International Jazz day and as we come to a conclusion of Jazz Appreciation Month, I hope your heart will be into checking out my jazz tune.

Its’s entitled “You are the One” and was written by (me) Stephanie Jeannot and John Mueller. It was released on the album, The Stephanie Jeannot & John Mueller Project on October 10, 2020 and this is the video to the link: https://youtu.be/gjhhtZYn6No

Thank you so much for reading my blogpost. Happy International Jazz Day.

I Tried Something Different And It Worked. I Labeled It Change!

Neglecting to broaden their view
has kept some men doing one thing all their lives”
(Napoleon Hill)

Everything gets labeled on how you want to describe something. You look at a flower peeking it’s face out of the soil and you can easily say, it’s a hyacinth or it’s a rosebud. You listen to a sound of music and you can identify it as R&B, Jazz or Pop music. And so, thinking about this made me think about myself and how I label myself when giving a short description about who I am beyond just the face and name.

When asked to describe myself, usually the first thing I would say is that I am a singer-songwriter from Brooklyn, NY which is true. But, I write more than songs.

Poetry Writing

I have been writing poetry since the fifth grade and recently, I authored two poetry books: The first was titled “Pulchritudinous” and the second “And Then There Was the Music; Poetry & An Essay.” Check out my author page on Amazon Author Central here: https://www.amazon.com/Stephanie-Jeannot/e/B076N7XYC6

Songwriting & Writing Compositions

I write compositions. The first one I ever wrote was quite recently when I found myself with this melody in my brain that I just had to write down on paper but what I wrote was more than just the words, but the chords of the song on paper before even recording the tune into what it came to be. Thankful that I had good friends who helped me to complete the tune entitled “God is Love” which you can check out on Spotify here:

Blog Writing

I write blog posts which surprisingly enough has been getting so much love lately and I am so thankful that people actually are interested in what I have to write. Thank you all who take the time to check out my blogsite. If it had not been for my college professor in his teaching of Professional writing, I never would have started writing blogposts at all. But he made us all start a blog site and this was my first one, if you are interested in checkign it out: https://stephanayjnotes.blogspot.com/.

Playwriting

And so, writing has always been my thing. But what I never did was found such an interest in writing something that I researched “how to” do it. It taught me how to place my words on the page, the font face to use, how to space things out and everything. And that is how I wrote my first play and the production of it was performed live this weekend for the first time.

It was nerve wrecking. It tested my faith. It brought tears to my eyes and made me work harder than I ever had at anything before, but I got through it.

For the first time ever, I wrote a little play, “And Then There Were The Ladies of Jazz;” a production that I could have never have been able to see come to life if I had let go of God’s unchanging hand.

I wanted to tell a story and I wanted everybody to hear some historical things dealing with racial and gender identities that these women in jazz had to endure to become the iconic individuals that they are. But I wanted to make it fun and give people something to watch that was interesting and fun.

I can’t believe we did it. Thank you to everybody who came out to support and for laughing and clapping when I was hoping that these things would happen. You all are so blessed and to have this weight of wanting to see it happen as badly as I did, off my shoulder, is so inspiring to me; Especially after the worthless worrying, the setting up of the room, the three wardrobe changes I did which included trying to come out my shell by putting on my tap shoes, and the singing a plethora of songs that left me feeling weary, but good. All that is left to say is... thank you and God is awesome.

And to all the people who gave me advice or had their hands in it. So very thankful. And for every circumstance that helped me with getting the costumes together or to printout some stationaries for my guest audience to take home and the putting together of props that seemed weirdly placed into my zine, just for me, at the most awkward time and in such unique ways. And for all the musicians and singers who had to see me get into my crazy... thank you for bearing with me.

It was fun. It was a delight. It was a pleasure. It was a vision I had as a way of celebrating women’s history month and I am glad to have seen it come to light. And now I am happy to say, I am a singer and writer from Brooklyn, NY.

Thank you so much for checking out my blogpost. God bless!

Happy Mother's Day

Happy Mother's Day weekend!

I realize it is the weekend and if you are like me, then you are probably getting ready to celebrate your supportive and beautiful mother (if you have not started celebrating her already) who like no other, has been there giving you the best of her that she possibly could give. I imagine myself being like her trying to put my foot into Sunday dinner like she does, but nobody can cook like my mom and so, I'm going to try my best.

So what are your plans?  I hope that you celebrate and experience much joy together in the midst of the weekend and perhaps, you might feel the urge to tune in to my radio show Jazz on the JNote this Sunday, May 8th, 2016 at 7:30PM on WNYE 91.5 FM,  which will be attributed to the mothers. So listen while you are relaxing on your Sunday evening, eating dinner with your family, or whatever it is that you will be doing at that time, If you are by a radio, tune in. If you are in your car, tune in. If you have a smart phone or device, tune-in.com

Or maybe after the long and drawn out mother's day service at church, you decide all you want to do is come home and relax and you decide to celebrate mother's day on a different day.
No worries!

If you are in New York or in the surrounding area and are looking for something special to do with your mother, maybe you can save it for Tuesday night May 10, 2016, when I will join the stage with Danny Dalelio for our duet performance of piano and vocal jazz at Stop Time in Brooklyn, NY from 9:30PM to Midnight. It is a nice and cozy space with friendly, and beautiful staff and right there in the heart of Brooklyn, which is always in my opinion,
a great place to be.

Or maybe you want to save it for the weekend, which would be great too because on Saturday, May 14th, 2016, I will be performing live with my band JNote at Moda Grill from 7:30PM to 11PM and you are more than welcome to come and experience live R&B, pop, funk and soul of past and present times mixed in with some of my originals which I look forward to sharing. Stop by if you can. I mean, what better reason for you come to Queens
than to celebrate the Queen of your life.

Wherever and whenever or whatever you decide to do to celebrate your mother's, I hope that we can somehow spend some time celebrating together. Perhaps I'll see you and I look forward to it!

Have an enjoyable and wonderful Mother's Day!

Married to "The Sound of Music"

"Jazz music is America's past and its potential, summed up and sanctified
and accessible to anybody who learns to listen to, feel,
and understand it. The music can connect us to our earlier selves
and to our better selves-to-come. It can remind us of where we fit
on the time line of human achievement, an ultimate value of art.”
– Wynton Marsalis

Something New

There is no truer statement than this. As a music lover, sometimes you connect to songs and genres of music without even realizing it until you find out where the song comes from.

28183-Clipart-Illustration-Of-Sound-Flowing-From-A-Pair-Of-Black-Music-Speakers-Surrounded-By-Circles-On-A-Bursting-Background.jpgI have been in the process of trying to gain more strength in my piano playing, referencing books of sheet music and trying to play while reading, which is not easy.

I have come to a point where I have begun doing research on music, trying to find out more about jazz and within the process, I got a sheet music book of Ragtime songs. The book consists of over 20 tunes that were popular during that era by some of the most famous ragtime musicians of that day and time.

Something Borrowed

I am not sure if this applies to all young people, but I know that when I was a little girl, the sound of the ice cream truck during the summertime would draw my attention and caused me to be uneasy because I wanted some of the tasty treats offered. Even if I did not run to the truck, the music was sonorous and delightful. Until today, I remember it and have tried to repeat the phrases of the nameless song that used to call attention to children, on my keyboard, still not knowing much about the song except for what it sounded like. And then, I opened up the Ragtime piano charts book, started with the first page and when I began to play the song, to my surprise there it was.

The title of the song is “The Entertainer” which was written by the King of Ragtime also known as Scott Joplin in 1902. How interesting to find that after decades of first hearing a song and loving it without even knowing anything about the content of its music, that  I'd come to realize I enjoyed Ragtime music all my life. This could possibly be why when “Ragtime” was in the theatres in NYC, I had been with desire to see it. Though I never have, I am grateful to have a book featuring songs of this type that I can use in my own unique way.

Something Blue
2014-06-17 00.39.24.jpg

By unique I mean, I have kid sized hands that I have to stretch more than most people to play with both hands. My left hand has been underutilized and it feels like lifting weights trying to get it into piano playing mode.

Yet, I practice until my left hand is sore and my fingers are blue and numb. Hopefully I will get better at it, but for now, coming to more of an understanding of music is wonderful and helps me to value the art more than I ever considered.

Strange to be married to a simple sound of music without even knowing how much it has affected you as a person. And that's when you realize how influential music really is.

The idea of being a musician and lover of what I do, makes my heart leap!
