Songwriter Wednesday: "Time Machine"

Have you ever wished that you had a time machine to be wherever you wanted to be in the blink of an eye?

No more 80-mile drives to a far distant place just to get into the things that your heart says yes to but your energy says, maybe another time. Instead, you could just climb into a contraption, press a few buttons, and boom, you are there.

You wouldn’t have to rely on airlines and hope that their staff doesn’t all get sick that day. You do not have to sit in rush hour traffic hoping that whatever mess is before you on the journey home will clear up. No more wishing to go back in time to revisit a person or to relive a moment. You could just climb into the time machine and Bam.

That is what I was thinking about when I wrote the song “Time Machine.” After a long work week, I want to be like the road runner and zoom home in a flash. I wish I had a “Time Machine” to be where I want to be and to do what I want to do when I want to do it.

If you could relate to any of this, please check out my song “Time Machine.”

Poettues: Lake Street Station

Poettues

Lake Street Station
by Stephanie Jeannot

Weekday vibes in the midst of the rush

Through the CTA Station, music sprinkling down on us

A guy spitting bars on the crowded platform

Over an ocean wave of bass thumps satiating the core

You could hear the refreshing sound of the buskers blazing

I pulled my phone out to take a cameo of their sound exchanging

I caught the fever and all I wanted to do was sing along with them

And so, while the rapper spat, I hummed and started ad-libbing

We vibed until the El came chugging into the station

I almost didn’t want to board because I was really feeling ‘em

It was a scene that reminded me of NYC, making me feel like I was home

Something else to add to the love of Chicago, from these experiences that I own

__________________________________________________________________________________

The poem was based on my explorations of Chicago via the CTA; perfect for Poetry Tuesday.

Every time I am in Chicago, riding the El is on my bucket list of things I want to do
and so, I do it and I always end up seeing something else that fascinates my eyes.

Also, while here on my downtime, I am experimenting using various apps to complete short video editing projects.

What's Happening with JNote Music

This year seems to be speeding by with excessive speed.

It feels almost as if it were yesterday that the ball dropped into 2022 and we brought in the new year with screams of joy and hopes for a different season than the pandemic one that interrupted our flowing lives in so many different ways. But I am looking forward to the second half of the year that is about to embrace us with hopes that it will bring about much better times in all areas of our lives.

News

I have been in the studio working on new music and I looking forward to releasing brand new songs that I cannot wait for you to hear. Jazz on the JNote: Tribute to Sarah Vaughan, Airs this Sunday, March 27, 2022 at 7:30PM EST on WNYE 91.5 FM

Sarah Vaughan was a world-renowned singer and pianist who was regarded as one of the greatest of all jazz singers.

She was a contralto with a range of three octaves. She sang with rhythmic flexibility and blessed any record that she sang on to make it to become timeless, universal music.

Some called her Sassy; others, the Divine One. I call her my favorite singer. And I am taking great pleasure in celebrating the life and cherishable art of this Grammy Award winning artist. With that in mind, I would like to invite you to listen in to this week’s episode of my radio show Jazz on the JNote.

What will you hear?

You will hear the capricious voice of Ms. Sarah Vaughan gushing out of her mouth and coming alive in your ear like an explosion of color burgeoning to blossom. You will hear some of the relics of her heroinism; those that made her brief time on the planet meaningful. You will hear sounds that come from the ecstatic world of jazz music and you will hear the voice of the host and producer of Jazz on the JNote Radio Show, Stephanie Jeannot, using the duration of the show to celebrate the charm, vibrato and life of the Divine One.

The show airs this Sunday, March 27, 2022 at 7:30 PM EST, as part of the Medgar Evers College Community Radio stream over the air waves of WNYE 91.5 FM. To find out more info on Jazz on the JNote, you can click on the link below to check out some of the flyers and previous episodes of this show, for your viewing and listening pleasure: JNOTEMUSIC.COM

My hope is that you will join us for the newest radio stream this Sunday evening and that the songs will not only get you listening to Sarah Vaughan’s amazing vibrato hit you full in the face so effectively that it makes you want to sing along and dance throughout the show’s entirety, but that this week’s episode of Jazz on the JNote will bring a positive and joyous end to your weekend.

Catch it live on Sunday March 27, 2022 at 7:30PM EST on WNYE 91.5 FM.

Looking Forward!

Moments of joy on the stage shared at the Ufa Jazz Club in Ufa, Russia.

What a beautiful night of music before a great audience with an amazing band doing some jazz, classic rock and a few originals.

It was one of the most interesting experiences of my life to visit and see different parts of Russia, thank to Edelman Entertainment and their willingness to take a chance on my music and talent.

It felt good singing on the stage in Ufa and God willing,
one day I will have the opportunity to do it again.

Join Into the Drum Circle at Potay in Brooklyn, NY

The hand drum class, circle and open mic at Potay.Haiti.Caribbean.Us.All was my point of interest this past Friday night. I did not really know what to expect but what I can say is that a blessing was lavished on me just by being present in that space.

With such superb skill and panache, the host, Okai, got the air of learning and personal enjoyment flowing. Not only did he give insight on how to play Conga drums or Djembe drums, but also how to get your voice across with uniqueness; by voice I mean, the sound that vibrates out of your hand hitting the drums. And by uniqueness, I mean that though all participants were taught the same hand gestures, every person still plays with their own incredible degree of diversity.

Potay located as 2720 Farragut Road in Brooklyn, NY definitely had something special going on. As time slipped away between our fingers, there were a n umber of lessons being learned between the hand drum class and the open mic that shortly followed it. One of them is like Paul Coelho said, “wherever your heart is there you will find your treasure.”

My heart has had an inextinguishable light for singing all my life and most recently in piano. I didn’t actually consider that I might be accompanying other participants via keyboard or that I would be learning new songs to play on the spot but being in synchrony with others at this event helped me to increase my knowledge of my musicianship a bit more.

Another thing that I learned was like Carlos Santana said, “people are flowers. Music is water. Musicians are the hose.” Considering how the curiosity of knowing more about hand drums and becoming more familiar with the cultural aspects of it was almost like broaching the idea that there is nothing wrong with being who you are individually. We all shared, and all voices were respected and heard which means more to me than I can express because at that point, it is a realization that there is no reason to derail your efforts and so it alleviated uncertainties as far as who you are and what you had to bring to the table because everybody banded together like family.  So, I felt comfortable introducing my music and the scope of my performing voice as a live exhibition to them.

The drum circle event was beyond helpful. I felt elated to experience gather together on that Friday night and become a part of the community and to be filled with the wealth of information that I received. It helped to draw a smile on my face that has yet to leave ever since. If you want to see for yourself how it went, I invite you to check out this video for yourself and hopefully, it will bring you joy as it did for me. Watch it here: https://youtu.be/7LBROH-GfjM

Potay has a lot of great things going on at it’s establishment. Like for instance, on Thursdays, they have Capoeira classes where you can learn the art of this cultural dance. Every day after school, there is tutoring being offered for those who need it. And on Friday afternoons, I will be teaching singing and piano.

If you are even mildly interested, I will be starting group and private singing/piano lessons starting on November 5th at Potay.

Check out the flyer and let me know if you have interest or any probing questions that I might
be able to answer about it. And if you feel like being a part of the glorious moment of hand drumming, it is a recurring event happening every Friday at Potay. Maybe you feel like escaping to something different, all happening at Potay on Farragut Road and Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn, NY. So stop on through and you will not be disappointed.
