V is For Vitality

“Life is to be embraced while it still hugs back.
Not everything has to be absolutely perfect.”
– Karl Vick

I tend to find inspiration to continue on this journey with vitality and it comes from a variety of places like for instance, I have this radio show which I originally started to help me write my 30-paged college thesis on jazz, identity and racism and you will not believe the encouragement I gained through it recently.

Having the show helped me to research and discover more about the history of this musical genre which is also a culture that began on American soil by people of color. I could go on for life about the many different shows I have produced in the past three and a half years since it started with hopes to keep jazz from becoming a dying art, as vivacious to me as this art form is, but I am eager to talk about one of my most recent shows.

We all have a wealth of life experiences. We all wear coats of many colors and we all have had at least one shattering experience; but I have never heard a story quite similar to that of my last interviewee on the show. The interview inspired me in so many ways.

You cannot imagine the sense of completeness I felt listening to my friend Bill Rivers who is the host and producer of his own television show, “Showcased Talent” talk about his amazing story. The fact that even with his experiences and the circumstances he had to face and yet he still reaches for the next rungs of life and success with renewed confidence brings new meaning for me to what building your hopes on the fact that you are still here proceeding in life with vitality really means.

I am very excited because beyond just the audio file, I was blessed with a video feed of it. You can check out the visual component of it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0srPrwuQIQ&feature=youtu.be

If you have a breakthrough story and are interested in sharing it on the air to let listeners know about who you are, what you do and your experiences that added passion and purpose to your life, please feel free to reach out to me via email at jazzonthejnote@yahoo.com

This Sunday 2/11/18 on Jazz on the JNote: Tribute to Nelson Mandela

The human voice is the organ of the soul”
(Valorie Burton)

Nelson Mandela used the totality of his being to change the face of the modern world. He spent his life entrenched in thought about being a victim of cultural imposition and used his voice to speak up against it. He took on the stupendous task of organizing social wars for the mental, spiritual and physical freedom of his people.

He became a legend in his own time because he worked hard to make adjustments to the so-called laws of supremacy that came in the apartheid era when human rights for people who were living in South Africa were continuously being violated. He provided encouragement then and still in today’s world. And with this in mind, this Sunday, my show Jazz on the JNote will be dedicated to his life.

This Sunday, Jazz on the JNote which is a jazz-based radio show hosted by Stephanie Jeannot, will focus on the life and achievements of the hero, Nelson Mandela, as part of our four-week Black History Month series. While the non-stop music flow of jazz is being played, there will also be moments of conversation about the life and times of the first black president of South Africa. Please listen if you can.

This Sunday, September 4, 2016 on Jazz on the JNote

The unofficial end of summer influenced my direction last night and I found myself trying a different kind of mix featuring different sounds of carnival music which will be airing throughout the weekend on Medgar Evers College Community Radio. If you should happen to get in the mood to lose your sanity and also some body inches while dancing to old and new sounds of Trinidad, Haiti, Cuba and more, you can log on to http://www.wmecradio.com from your phone or computer and take a listen to this hour long show for yourself.

Medgar Evers College Community Radio is a 24/7 on-line radio station from the studios of Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, NY which features cross-cultural talk and music programs. Jazz on the JNote just happens to be one of those shows.

 Jazz on the JNote

At first, the show was started while attending Medgar Evers College. I was writing my undergraduate college thesis on the music of jazz and racism, and I felt that I had enough interesting points on this subject to discuss jazz, as well as a plethora of jazz music pieces that had an effect on me, featured in my music library. I wanted to be a part of the jazz culture and thankful for the opportunity of being a contributor to the continuation of the spreading of the jazz culture for just over a year now.  I am happy to invite you all to send comments and suggestions for this show, even if it is to let me know about new music that you would like to hear played within the time frame of the show to jazzonthejnote@yahoo.com

I am always seeking new ideas to add that will take me out of the box in which I am currently enclosed. Change, in my opinion, often serves as great lessons, and I thank you in advance for those who will chime in and feed me new ideas.
